What would you take?
Personally, I wouldn’t go green with this pack. If I take Garruk then I also want Rofellos. Problem is, rofellos might be good enough to put someone into green. That means that if I take Garruk, then i probably will be fighting for good green cards the entire draft. The same goes if I take Rofellos. So, green is out for me.
Blue has some tasty treats to offer in this pack. The shackles are super strong and if we are going to go blue, they are probably the first blue card I would take. Then i would be happy to get back any of the other blue cards. Clique is awesome specially if we manage to get some way to abuse it – a-la cards like recurring nightmare or crystal shard. Same goes for cloudskate. Tezzeret probably won’t wheel but, if it did, I’d certainly hop aboard that gravy train. Yeah, blue is looking pretty badass right now. Nevertheless, I’m not feeling it. When taking shackles, you have to figure that someone is going to take TEZ and Clique will probably be gone too. Spellskite is a card that I love in blue builds and that certainly should NOT come back. So, I don’t think I would take a blue card first.
Do yourself a favor: Don’t view a lone Stromkirk noble as an opening to start forcing mono red. That’s foolishness.
Black is looking mighty fine. The cards aren’t so good that they jump out of the pack because of the huge shadow being cast by two planeswalkers, bomb-tastic blue cards, and green-ramp gold. So, I think it might be our best bet to make an early commitment to black. If we take the Phyrexian Arena, that leaves black sun’s zenith, tragic slip, and Geth – all of which have a pretty high likelihood of wheeling.
It’s probably not the right pick and it’s not the most powerful, but drafting is about having fun and improving your strategies. And, its completely subjective. Hah!
So lets hear it. What would you take?

I’d probably take the port. Goes is almost any deck since I’m not usually mana hungry like Sam and I lean towards aggro. The planeswalkers are bombs but I like to stay open early on.
There is definitely a lot of merit to staying open here. I don’t give rishadan port the credit it deserves.
Maybe I give it too much credit but I’ve won so many games just from shutting a player out of their second or third color or from keeping them off curve when I am only playing little aggro dudes.
Eh, a little of column A and a little of column B. lol
I like your reasoning, and agree that Phyrexian Arena is probably the strongest pick. I almost always draft control, but if a card sticks out to me p1p1 and offers a different archetype, sometimes I’ll take it for variety’s sake. Edric happens to be one of those cards, so there’s a good chance I’d grab him and force a tempo deck. There’s a good chance Riftwing Cloudskate wheels unless someone else picks up Venser (the pw) early. And there’s the chance, however slight, that we’ll get lucky and have Clique table.
I like edric a lot but, honestly, have almost no experience with him outside of commander. The other thing is he’s a first pick that puts you into two colors. (Not that I haven’t done that before lol) I know what you mean though. It seems that the more I draft, the more I push those questionable picks to see what I can get away with. Cloudskate could definitely table and tempo is a deck I love. I like your style buddy
sometimes you gotta go nuts and go into a million colors. I’ve p1p1d a venser plenty of times.
oh yeah! I had ajani vengeant and tezzeret AoB in my first four picks recently…
